david ligareWe love this Still Life with Olives and Wheat (2012) by contemporary artist David Ligare, as spotted in http://www.artandantiquesmag.com.

Californian artist David Ligare takes frequent inspiration from the classical Greco-Roman world and has been painting still life images since 1987, when he hit upon his distinctive style of presenting objects in open containers in an outdoor setting for optimum juxtaposition of light and shade.

To define his latest series Ligare employs the Greek term aparchai, meaning offerings of food that were left for the god in ancient – and even modern – times in some cultures. The aparchai pictured here is intended for the Greek goddess Athena, as evidenced by her signature owl familiar on an Attic vase.
