Amazon opens automated grocery store

Amazon has opened its checkout-free grocery store, Amazon Go, after four years of preparation, moving forward on an experiment that could dramatically alter brick and mortar retail.

Amazon Go uses the world’s most advanced shopping technology so customers never have to wait in line. With the Just Walk Out Shopping experience shoppers can use the Amazon Go app to enter the store, take the products they want and then leave. Shortly afterwards Amazon will send them a receipt and charge their Amazon account.

Amazon has utilised the same types of technologies used in self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning. The Just Walk Out Technology automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart.

The Amazon store offers ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack options made by Amazon chefs and favourite local kitchens and bakeries. The selection of grocery essentials ranges from staples like bread and milk to artisan cheeses and locally made chocolates. The chef-designed Amazon Meal Kits include all the ingredients you need to make a meal for two in about 30 minutes.

Amazon is already the world’s largest online retailer and last year bought high-end supermarket chain Whole foods Market for $13.7 billion. Long lines are known to put-off shoppers, so any retailer that’s able to eradicate wait time will have a huge advantage in the grocery stakes.
